Monica de MartinSociete Generale Americas employee Monica De Martin has been recognized by the Volunteers of Legal Service as a member of its 2022 Dean’s List. The award recognizes Monica’s exceptional service and her impact in helping VOLS’ clients – low-income and under-resourced New Yorkers – access legal support and obtain dignity, security and opportunity. VOLS has been a legal services partner of the Societe Generale Americas Pro Bono program since it was launched in 2016.

Monica, who is the only in-house Dean’s List recipient this year, said she was honored to be recognized alongside her fellow Deans List award recipients. “VOLS provides a tremendous platform for lawyers to give back to those in our community who may not have ready access to legal services, but who nonetheless deserve quality legal support,” Monica said. “I look forward to continuing my work with VOLS.”

Through SG America’s Pro Bono program, Monica has handled several matters in partnership with VOLS. She is currently involved with the re-launch of the VOLS Incarcerated Mothers Law Project, which provides free legal advice, information and advocacy to women in jail and prison to help them protect their parental rights, arrange care for their children, maintain family ties, and plan for reunification. She has also worked on small business and senior law matters and volunteered for legal clinics arranged by the VOLS Children’s Law Project. Since 2021, she has served as an inaugural member of the VOLS Pro Bono Advocates Council, which brings together emerging private bar leaders who have a shared commitment to pro bono legal services.

“The work that Monica has done with VOLS over the last several years has made an impact on many people’s lives,” said Laura Schisgall, Generale Counsel, SG Americas. “I am proud of her work and the work of all those who make the SG Americas Pro Bono program a success.  We also appreciate our long-running partnership with VOLS, which makes so much of our work possible.”

The Dean’s List was launched in 2021 and is dedicated to the memory of Bill Dean, VOLS’ former executive director of 25 years, who served as a pro bono champion and thought leader throughout his career.

“VOLS Dean’s List Awardees embody the mission of VOLS: using the power of the private bar to help improve the lives of our most vulnerable neighbors,” said Adja Midha, Executive Director of VOLS. “VOLS’ clients, and New York City, are better for their service.”
